Why do you take action on some things and not others? Intrinsic Motivation…

Do you ever wonder why you feel like working on your photography skills late into the night rather than doing extra work for your day job? It’s all about Intrinsic Motivation. “Intrinsic motivation occurs when we act without any obvious external rewards. We simply enjoy an activity or see it as an opportunity to explore, learn, and actualise our potentials” (Coon & Mitterer, 2010).

On our app you’ll find an abundance of local classes, workshops, events, experiences and opportunities to micro-volunteer, all of which contribute to your Intrinsic Motivation. The factors that they identify as increasing Intrinsic Motivation are challenge (pursuing personal meaning), curiosity (grabs your attention), control, cooperation (helping others makes us feel good), competition (how we compare to others) and recognition. This is quite contrasting to activities that result in punishment and external reward, such as exercising at a gym and getting employee of the month. When we are spending our time with activities that give us pleasure as well as a ‘result’ then that is a healthy hook and encourages us in the future to do more. Happylocal is where you can find out what’s on, connect with like-minded people in your community and help you feel a part of something bigger.

So what have you tried lately? What would you like to do more of? We love hearing how you spend your time here in this stunning region of ours, flick us a message! There’s no denying that this is the season to embrace some positive change in your local life.
